Mandela Day Marathon 27 August 2017
fromMANDELA DAY MARATHON (Pietermaritzburg) 27 August 2017
The Mandela Day Marathon, is said to be the toughest Marathon in South Africa, the route is designed to characterize the hardships that Tata Nelson Mandela went through in his life. The race starts in Manayi Hall in Imbali township, where Nelson Mandela made his last public speech on March 1961 and finishes at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick, where Nelson Mandela was captured before being sent to prison for 27 years.
Runners are taken through some testing hills with an 8km hill, correctly named the struggle hill, awaiting runners between the 10km and the 18km mark. After the struggle hill there are many little, yet challenging, unnamed hills that really require each runner to dig deep.
The race also has a very challenging 21 km race and a 10km race.
